This is such a cute and easy Early Years bee craft activity! It can be made with few resources and little ones are able to create on their own, perfect for toddlers and pre-schoolers. Read below for supplies needed and a quick step by step guide.
We’ve been learning lots about bees during the summer holidays, as our lavender outside the house attracts many! So I wanted to set up a little craft activity all about bees and it was a hit for both my 2 and 9 year old.
Materials
- White paper plate
- Yellow and black paint
- Paintbrushes
- Peg
- Large pom pom
- Wooden craft sticks
- x2 white pom poms or googly eyes
- Glue stick or PVA glue
Early Years Bee Craft – How to
Step 1: Paint the entire paper plate yellow and leave to dry
Step 2: Whilst plate is drying, paint the wooden craft sticks black (for the antennae). Alternatively you could use black pipe cleaners if you have them.
Step 3: Place the pom pom inside the peg and dip into black paint. Use this to print circles across the plate for the lines. Leave a little space at the top for the eyes.
Step 4: If using white pom poms, add a little black paint in the middle of each to create the eyes. Alternatively, you could use google eyes if you have them.
Step 5: Add the wooden craft sticks at the top of the paper plates, sticking part of the stick behind the plate. Do the same for the pipe cleaners if you are using those.
Step 6: Stick the eyes to the top of the plate. Ta-da! A fun and cute bee craft!
How this activity supports development
Expressive arts and design. Allows little ones to get creative using paints and different techniques with paintbrushes and printing.
Physical development. Helps develop fine motor skills through painting with brushes, stamping with the peg and gluing and sticking.
Understanding the world. Encourages conversation about bees during the summer time – why are they so important to our world? What do bees make? Introduce the concept of pollination and talk about their features (colours, stripes, antennae).
I hope you and your little ones enjoy this bee craft activity! If you are looking for other toddler crafts, why not try a flower sun catcher next? https://theeducatormum.co.uk/toddler-craft-activity-flower-sun-catcher/.
